Fed: Medical concerns prompt permanent ASIC ban for Rene Rivkin

Convicted insider trader RENE RIVKIN has lost the right to provide financial services
after being banned permanently by the corporate regulator.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission says Mr RIVKIN'S current medical
illness means he would likely lack the capacity to ensure he complies with financial services
laws.

Earlier this month, GAYLE RIVKIN spoke publicly about how her husband's judgement deteriorated
and his personality changed as a series of tumours grew in his brain.

She told the launch of the Australasian Brain Tumour Bank in Sydney that his judgement
was lacking, his social decisions were haphazard and that he didn't fully appreciate the
realities of life.

Mr RIVKIN was the holder, under the former licensing regime, of a dealer's licence
and an authority from Tarfaya Nominee Pty Ltd, which published The Rene Rivkin Report.

It's not known whether he'll appeal yesterday's ban.

Mr RIVKIN has been serving nine months' periodic detention after being convicted in
the NSW Supreme Court in April 2003 of insider trading involving Qantas shares.
